March 2010

From the foothills of the Himalayas, I send my best wishes to you for a happy and prosperous 2010.

As usual, I’ve been quite busy–partly with projects I have initiated and partly with fulfilling the vision and obligations set in motion by the First and Second Tsoknyi Rinpoches. It is my intention in this letter to (more…)

On Becoming a Student of Tsoknyi Rinpoche III

Rinpoche invited all of his students beginning with the 2009 Devotion Retreat in Crestone, to acknowledge their student-teacher relationship with him, if they chose to do so. He said that there has been confusion around the issue of who is and who is not his student, and that he wished to clarify it by asking students to accept a “student mandala card.”

A Letter from Tsoknyi Rinpoche III on Tashi Lama

I am happy to give my full and complete authorization to Tsewang Rinzing Lama, also known as Tashi Lama, to give teachings in Buddhist theory and practice whenever he may be requested to do so.

Tashi Lama became a monk of Tulku Urgyen Rinpoche at the Kat Nying Shedrup Ling monastery in Boudhanath, Nepal in 1975, when he was nine years old. Tashi Lama completed his full monastic training, including philosophical learning and study, training in ritual practices and personal meditation retreat between 1975-1991, primarily under the guidance of Tulku Urgyen Rinpoche and Chokyi Nyima Rinpoche. (Tulku Urgyen Rinpoche was well known throughout the world as a meditation master. He passed away in February 1996.) Tashi Lama has served as my main assistant since 1991, when I first began my major work of building Ngesdon Osel Ling monastery in Nepal and giving Buddhist teachings throughout the world. In 1992, Tashi began accompanying me on my travels to teach outside of Nepal.

He is a core teacher in my organization and has traveled and taught with me in the following countries: India, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, and Taiwan in Asia; the U.K., France, Switzerland, Germany, and Austria in Europe; the U.S. and Canada in North America; and, Argentina and Brazil in South America.

Kungo Kalsang Choten

Kungo Kalsang Choten

On the mahasamadhi of beloved Kungo* Kalsang Choten, who passed away at 7:00 a.m. on September 16, 2009, at Osel Ling Monastery, Nepal, at the age of 84:

Kungo Kalsang Choten was the half-brother of Tulku Urgyen Rinpoche and enjoyed a father-son relationship with Tsoknyi Rinpoche and his three brothers. He tutored Tsoknyi Rinpoche in grammar and Tibetan calligraphy (for which Kungo-la was well known), and in later years he became an important advisor and consultant to Tsoknyi Rinpoche during his early days of teaching. Kungo-la was renowned for his kindness, humility, and generosity, and he is dearly loved and treasured by all the lamas at Ka-Nying Shedrub Ling. He was a supreme example of a great spiritual dharma practitioner for all, and he considered himself very lucky and fortunate to live in these celestial circumstances. (more…)

A note from Rinpoche about the safety of the Nangchen Nuns

Tuesday, May 5th, 2009

The Tsoknyi Nangchen Nuns in China and their gonpas were not adversely affected in any way by earthquakes or political unrest that occurred in 2008. No one knows the long-term economic impact on the Nuns that these and future unexpected events may have. Rinpoche will keep us advised as matters unfold.

M.L. Mackie

Sunday, May 3rd, 2009

ml-mackieRinpoche wanted everyone to know that M.L. Mackie completed her Ngondro before turning 70, as she had aspired to do.

Here’s Rinpoche’s note to her dated March 9, 2009:

“I got your news while staying in a downtown London hotel at 10:15 in the morning. I am really amazed at your accomplishment and appreciate your effort and enthusiasm. I consider Ngondro as one of the main practices. You fulfilled your goal before you turned 70—very good. Keep doing this and keep going.”

On the Passing of the Great Master, Penor Rinpoche
by Tsoknyi Rinpoche III

penor-rinpoche

Penor Rinpoche had been very ill for the last five to six months, and he passed away at 8:20 p.m., Friday, March 27, 2009. While he was ill, he was able to give his students advice on how to practice after his passing, and because of this, I feel it will not be very difficult for his work to continue.

(An auspicious and magnificent rainbow appeared preceding H.H. Penor Rinpoche’s death in March. To see this amazing event on video, please click here: Rainbow at Palyul Monastery.) (more…)
